The story behind the box...
In 2010 our son Carter began up-cycling old, broken crayons into new and exciting crayon cars. His passion for taking old and unused items and making them into something new has lead us to use that same vision in our home. We gathered up old mason jars, quilts and antiques given to us from our grandparents and re-purposed them into things we now use every day. When we began discussing a way to expand the operation of our farm into the winter season we immediately thought of preserved items and fresh fruit (we love the oranges, grapefruit and pears we get every November through Local Harvest). But what to put them in?
Nathan soon remembered a smoke house on his families farm in Hart Co. that dates back to before the the 1900's. His family used the smoke house to store wood for the stove that heated their home. He remembers all the cold winter days that he would walk to the smoke house to gather wood. A basketball goal hung on the side of the smoke house and he remembers many pick up games with his father. Nathan says, "There are no telling how many times a basketball hit this wood, I think of that every time I watch the movie Hoosiers". The idea of the smoke house simply being lost forever was motivation for us to re-purpose its wood siding into a well crafted box that can be used for years to store magazines, mail, books or anything that needs a place to rest.
